Firefighters are victorious again!

The Cleveland Fire Memorial

This past year many of you have generously donated funds to help maintain the Cleveland Fire Memorial located on Erie Drive near Browns Stadium.  As you are aware, this project was initiated over 20 years ago to design, construct and dedicate a new Cleveland Fire Fighters Memorial.  The memorial was dedicated in 2007, replacing the previous stone memorial with this unique, vibrant, and lifelike monument designed by nationally renowned sculptor Luis Jimenez at the cost of nearly one-half million dollars.  Renovations projected to cost nearly $50,000 were recently identified to resurface the firefighter figures that were showing signs of deterioration. This deterioration only impacted the firefighter figures, not the flames.  Although no one can identify why this uncharacteristic deterioration occurred, all expert opinion anticipates that these renovations will establish the vitality of the monument well into the future.  We are eternally grateful to those of you who have helped us bring this project to reality.
Within the next few weeks the firefighter figures (not the flames) will be removed from the memorial and transported off-site by ICA – Art Conservation, a reputable regional art-conservation center.  The figures will be stripped down and all substrate assessed and returned to a stable state.  The surface will then be prepped and sealed for re-painting and ultimately remounted at the memorial.  We expect this process to be completed within the next few months and will keep everyone up-to-date on the progress.  When the figures are repaired and repainted the committee hopes to address some drainage and concrete issues remaining at the site that need to be addressed.  Once all repairs are completed, the Memorial should require only minimal routine maintenance in the future.
The Committee is excited about finally moving the renovation forward and we are sharing this update to keep everyone informed and with the hope that the project continues to maintain the full support of those who have brought it this far.  We expect the project to attract some local media coverage and will include the Division of Fire in any attention it may draw.  None of this would be possible without the generous backing of the Cleveland Division of Fire and its retirees.  Your support truly exemplifies the motto “We Will Never Forget.”   Thank you all for your continued support and we hope to see you soon at the next CFD Memorial event.
